Studio Art Centers International (SACI) in Florence, Italy, is proud to announce that in addition to our undergraduate and post-baccalaureate programs, students can earn an MFA degree in Studio Art (Painting or Drawing) or Photography.

Students in SACI's MFA programs pursue a curriculum integrating practical and critical skills that encourage individual innovation, creative collaboration, mentorships, and instruction from SACI's outstanding faculty. They benefit from interaction with members of the SACI Artists Council and the Friends of SACI Council, which include established artists, photographers, critics, curators, and publishers, many of international renown.

MFA students attend SACI in Florence for two successive academic years and earn 60 credits. During their first year, under the mentorship of their selected Major Professor, they put together a program that balances independent study with classroom study. In their second year, emphasis is placed upon career options for emerging artists. Students gain practical experience as teaching assistants and their work is featured in major exhibitions in Florence.

Working in their own individual studios in a fully renovated Renaissance palazzo in the heart of Florence, students are just steps away from the great works that have drawn artists and photographers past and present to Florence to seek inspiration and develop their own pictorial language. In their graduate seminars, students explore a range of contemporary art practices, visit artists in their studios, and interview museum curators, art critics, and other significant figures in the art world. Students travel to major art sites, attend international art fairs throughout Italy, and are encouraged, through individual practice and group critiques, to explore to the fullest their potential as creative artists.

SACI is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis through March 15, 2014.For details about our MFA programs and SACI scholarships, see SACI's website, www.saci-florence.edu.

PhD in Critical Spatial Thinking:

Design and Performative Practice

Application deadline: 15 December 2013

The School of Design and the faculty of Design, Architecture and Building (DAB) at UTS are proud to announce a new joint PhD program in partnership with the University of Vienna. We welcome applications in the area of Practice-informed Research (PiR), commencing in early 2014.

Critical Spatial Thinking: Design and Performative PracticeThis PhD program brings together candidates and leading academics from the UTS School of Design and the Institute for Theatre, Film and Media Studies at the University of Vienna in a trans-disciplinary research cluster. The program leads to a joint PhD degree, managed and taught at both universities. Working across the disciplines of spatial design, architecture, theatre, exhibition and media, the program engages existing design and artistic competencies and applies them directly to questions of design and performative practice.

PhD proposals must relate to one or several of the program's main research arenas:
–Critical Practices: Performance, Design and the Politics of Space
–Sharing Space: Collaborative Practices in Curating, Design and Performance
–Staging the City: Performative Strategies and the Activation of Urban Space

Successful candidates spend periods of time at both universities. The current academic leads at the respective institutions are Professor Thea Brejzek and Professor Lawrence Wallen from UTS; and Professor Wolfgang Greisenegger and Professor Brigitte Marschall from the University of Vienna.

The phrase "spatial practice" has become a confident and widely used term to describe a variety of architectural and artistic engagements with society and the city. In many ways, it defines the new and moving boundary of the design discipline. Seeking to engage with the public and social realm—physical or virtual—with a view to shaping and transforming human action and historical experience, the Art, Design and the Public Domain (ADPD) concentration of the Masters in Design Studies (MDes) program gathers creative and ambitious individuals from all backgrounds and academic disciplines with a predilection for intervention, exhibition and public work, and a keen interest in contemporary issues of urban, historical, aesthetic and technological culture.
The program offers a high degree of freedom for exploration and research in expanding the limits of spatial practice and integrating artists into the process of planning and design.

ADPD program participants are practicing artists, filmmakers, architects and cultural producers wishing to reframe, reboot and develop a practice of creative and imaginative speculation or art-related work with an emphasis on sophisticated thinking, advanced fabrication methodologies and techniques, and social and aesthetic engagement. The program strongly welcomes unconventional proposals for study that address emerging issues in all aspects of the changing social and cultural environment, and is designed to accommodate graduated MFAs as well as to serve the purposes of a traditional MFA program in lieu of an orthodox art academy. Students benefit from a wide variety of assets within the Harvard GSD—cultural theory, applied computation, fabrication, speculative design—and from strong links to other parts of Harvard University including Visual and Environmental Studies. In addition to collaborations with international centers of political and experimental arts, the program boasts an impressive group of associated faculty: contemporary artists and leaders of thought committed to working in a close relationship with the program and its participants.

Krzysztof Wodiczko, Professor in Residence of Art and the Public Domain

Pratt Institute's MFA in Fine Arts program is now accepting applications for the fall 2014 semester. Centrally located in Brooklyn's thriving creative community, Pratt's MFA program in Fine Arts immerses students in the cultures of contemporary art, supported by a faculty of working artists and peers. The graduate curriculum is both rigorous and flexible and fosters a deeper understanding of the histories, issues and cultural contexts that inform art-making today. Pratt's faculty members are distinguished by their achievements, exhibiting in New York and internationally, and receiving awards from the Guggenheim Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, Tiffany Foundation, Joan Mitchell Foundation, Skowhegan, Pollock-Krasner Foundation, Creative Capital, and Art Matters. Pratt's MFA program is ranked in the top 15 of 300 graduate programs in Fine Arts in the US News and World Reports and is housed on Pratt's beautifully landscaped, 25-acre campus in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn.

Areas of emphasis are offered in painting/drawing, integrated practices and new forms, photography, sculpture, and printmaking. Although students apply to a specific area of interest, the program encourages cross-disciplinary study. Almost half of the degree program credits are unrestricted, and students tailor their program of study to their individual interests in consultation with their faculty advisors. Students gain proficiency in every aspect of studio practice through a combination of rigorous critical discussion, a broad selection of courses and approaches, opportunities for internships and work experience in New York, and a public exhibition of thesis projects. Pratt MFA students in Fine Arts are well prepared to become significant critical and creative leaders in their fields.

All MFA students are given individual studios and have access to shops and labs, including a fully equipped wood shop, metal shop, print shop, ceramics studios, darkrooms, digital labs with high-resolution scanners and printers, as well as dedicated campus galleries. There are many opportunities to show work in a variety of traditional and nontraditional spaces on campus. Each semester, students open their studios to the public, and each spring, second-year students mount individual thesis shows that are also open to the public. In addition to a regular schedule of studio visits by faculty, the department's Visiting Artist Lecture Series (VALS) brings internationally renowned artists and critics to give public lectures and have individual studio visits with second-year graduate students. Pratt Artists League (PAL), a graduate student-run organization, also invites visiting artists and critics for studio visits and plans other student-generated activities and exhibitions. A five-week interdisciplinary summer course in Rome, "City as Studio," offers graduate students the opportunity to research and create site-specific work in an international context.

Scholarships: Graduate scholarships are available to incoming domestic and international students based on merit and are awarded upon acceptance. All students will be considered for scholarships. No application is necessary.
