The School of the Art Institute of Chicago's (SAIC) Master of Arts
in New Arts Journalism program reinterprets and transforms the skills
of a traditional journalist into the multitasking demands of a contemporary
arts journalist where text and image are frequently intertwined, and a
journalist is often the initial writer, designer, and editor of his or her
feature. Unlike journalism schools that add an arts emphasis, SAIC is a
vibrant school of art and design in which New Arts Journalism students can
combine the in-depth study of arts and journalism, and work closely with
artists, art historians, and cultural critics.

Application deadline: January 15, 2014
Columbia College ChicagoInterdisciplinary Arts Department
916 S. Wabash Avenue Suite 203Chicago, Illinois 60625www.colum.edu/interarts
The Interdisciplinary Book & Paper Arts MFA program within the
Interdisciplinary Arts Department at Columbia College Chicago promotes
understanding of hand papermaking, printmaking and the book arts as
artistic media with application in cultural discourse, community building
and collaborative practice. The coursework integrates both technical and
conceptual considerations and encourages experimentation with new media,
performance, and installation.
Professional practice This program encourages students to create a body of work that reflects the complexity of their world. They are asked to consider the context for that work—who is the audience, where will it be seen, how will it be presented? The emphasis on both creative practice and professional practice gives students an advantage—to become innovative practitioners and sophisticated professionals who understand how to position themselves in the contemporary art landscape. World-class facilities Our graduate program is taught within the internationally recognized Center for Book & Paper Arts that hosts numerous events, exhibitions, workshops, artist residencies and the publication of the Journal of Artist Books (JAB). Most recently, Columbia College transformed a 20,000-square-foot lot in downtown Chicago into the Papermaker's Garden—an innovative space for creative research where our students can learn how to nurture their own plants for hand papermaking. Hybrid practice The Interdisciplinary Arts Department has three graduate degrees; we encourage students to embrace the permeable nature of our programs to investigate a vast array of department offerings including studio courses in video, electronics, sound, interaction, performance, installation, and creative writing, and theory/practice courses addressing topics such as autobiographical art, the body, visual narratives, and art+science collaborations. Visiting artists The classroom and studio experience for Book & Paper Arts MFA students is enriched by a Visiting Artist program that allows for meaningful interaction through seminars, workshops, lectures, and individual critiques with internationally renowned practitioners. Recent visiting artists include Laura Anderson Barbata, Timothy Barrett, Zoe Beloff, Tania Brughera, Julie Chen, Guillermo Gomez-Pena, Eungie Joo, Daniel Kelm, Amos Kennedy, Alison Knowles, Ligorano/Reese, Lucy Lippard, Mary Lucier, Christina McPhee, Bill Viola, Paul Wong, Trevor Paglen, Triple Canopy, Andrea Polli, Bob Stein, Chris Salter, and Pamela Z. The Master of Fine Arts degree in Art Studio at UC Davis offers a
unique opportunity for study across a wide range of visual arts. The focus
is to hone artistic and perceptive abilities, build technical skills, and
foster intellectual development for individual students in their pursuit of
careers as practicing artists. Students are strongly encouraged to explore
whatever medium best serves their expressive needs. The Art Department has
facilities for drawing, ceramic/clay sculpture, painting, photography,
printmaking, video, and sculpture (we do not have a foundry). Graduate
students are also given large, individual studios on campus, which are
located near the main art building with 24/7 access.
In keeping with the mission of the University of California, tuition is very accessible and out-of-state students receive support to offset their expenses. Art Studio helps to financially support the education of its graduate students through generous Art Studio Fellowships and competitive awards endowed by Mary Lou Osborn, Robert Arneson, Fay Nelson, Freemon Gadberry, and The Nelson Artfriends. Students may also apply for university support through Graduate Studies Travel Awards, Davis Humanities Fellowships, and Consortium for Women and Research Awards. UC Davis participates in The Headlands Graduate Fellow Award program that supports year-long artist's residencies for recent M.F.A. graduates at the Headlands Center for the Arts. Some of our recent students have won nationally competitive graduate fellowships from The Dedalus Foundation and The Joan Mitchell Foundation. Graduate students also have the opportunity to work with the faculty as teaching assistants and as instructor of record as Associate Instructors. These positions come with pay and full tuition support.
The entire Art Studio faculty shares responsibility for the graduate program and teaches both graduate and undergraduate courses. The faculty represents a diversity of approaches across all disciplines. The faculty is available to all graduate students for one-on-one studio visits throughout the year and participate in all formal reviews.
Faculty include Tom Bills, Robin Hill, Darrin Martin, Hearne Pardee, Lucy Puls, Annabeth Rosen, Youngsuk Suh, and Gina Werfel.
MFA students in the Art Department are linked with the Art History, Cinema and Technocultural Studies, Music, and Performing Studies programs on campus. Visiting artists to all of these programs and to the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts on campus are an integrated and essential part of study. The university is an unparalleled resource in all disciplines of research to broaden and deepen the work of an artist. The Art Studio MFA program also includes a lively Visiting Lecture Series, which includes presentations and graduate critiques with artists. Among the past lecturers are Phong Bui, Joan Jonas, Gregory Amenoff, Mary Lucier, Robert Storr, Vito Acconci, Ken Johnson, Jed Perl, Fred Tomaselli, Kalup Linzy, Terry Winters, Larry Rinder, Jennifer and Kevin McCoy, Rochelle Feinstein, Dana Schutz, Ryan Trecartin, and Shana Moulton.
UC Davis is located about an hour's drive from Berkeley, Oakland and San Francisco; a six-hour drive from Los Angeles; a two-hour drive from the ocean and equidistant from Lake Tahoe. Davis is situated on the floor of the Sacramento Valley, hot and dry in the summer and cool and rainy in the winter and is surrounded by fruit and nut tree orchards. Napa and Sonoma are close at hand.

Art and design professionals in the 21st century must navigate a fluid
and networked global culture. Parsons prepares its graduates for this
rapidly evolving world by offering a range of cross-disciplinary graduate
programs that place advanced studio practice and research at their
center.
Master of Architecture (MArch)This three-year NAAB-accredited program combines contemporary studio practice with design history and theory, technology, and representation. Students are prepared to enter the professional architecture community and contribute to the shaping of a constructed world.
MFA Design and TechnologyToday's designer faces two fundamental challenges: the expanding influence of design within society and the growing role of technology within design. The MFA in Design and Technology provides a lively and dynamic environment for students to use design research, processes, applied theory, and writing to address these challenges. Launching at Parsons Paris in fall 2014.
MS Design and Urban EcologiesThis program radically reframes the study of cities. Through research and fieldwork, students gain a broad understanding of the forces that influence urban growth and development. Working in multidisciplinary teams, they design processes for urban transformation.
MA Design StudiesDrawing on the breadth and depth of expertise in design theory and practice at Parsons, this program focuses on project-based analysis and provides opportunities to explore design as both a field of scholarly research and an agent of social change.
MFA Fashion Design and SocietyBoth interdisciplinary and international in scope, this academy for advanced studies in fashion design trains a small group of world-class designers. Innovative and progressive, the program offers students the opportunity to make substantive contributions to the field of fashion design.
MA Fashion StudiesStudents in this groundbreaking program explore fashion through research and cultural analysis, examining it as object, image, text, practice, theory, and concept—and developing a critical understanding of fashion's complex global intersections with identities, histories, and cultures in the contemporary world.
MFA Fine ArtsStudents in the MFA in Fine Arts program acquire a comprehensive understanding of both the material elements that compose artworks and the ideas that make them meaningful. Students have access to exhibition venues in New York City and to fellowships and residencies through faculty and institutional networks.
MA History of Decorative Arts and DesignOffered jointly with the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, this program focuses on the stylistic, historical, and theoretical contexts of European and American decorative arts and design from the Renaissance to the present. Launching at Parsons Paris in fall 2014.
MFA Interior DesignThis program builds on 100 years of Parsons' history and leadership in the field of interior design and offers links to other Parsons graduate programs in architecture, product design, and lighting design. A three-year double major with an MFA in Interior Design and Lighting Design is also offered.
MFA Lighting DesignThe only graduate lighting program to emphasize the values of both design and civic responsibility, Parsons MFA Lighting Design program examines the relationships between theory, technical application, energy conservation, and social and environmental factors in both electric and natural light. A three-year double major with an MFA in Interior Design and Lighting Design is also offered.
MArch/MFA Lighting Design Dual DegreeStudents pursuing the MArch and MFA in Lighting Design as a dual degree to expand their knowledge of form, program, site, materials, and the role of lighting in structure.
MFA PhotographyThe graduate photography program functions as a 21st-century studio and think tank. Students are encouraged to develop their individual vision in a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment.
MS Strategic Design and ManagementThis rigorous industry-focused program prepares managers to launch and lead design process-driven organizations in our complex global economy. The curriculum combines business seminars and design courses. It can be completed entirely on campus in New York City or online with on-campus studies. Launching at Parsons Paris in fall 2014.
MA Theories of Urban PracticeThis research-driven, interdisciplinary graduate program prepares students to guide the transformation of cities as strategic leaders of community groups, foundations, educational institutions, think tanks, public agencies, private firms, and global networks of collaborative practices.
MFA Transdisciplinary DesignWorking in interdisciplinary teams, students address pressing social issues using new ideas, tools, and methods. They gain insights from industry leaders and emerge with a portfolio of projects showcasing design as a process for transforming the way we live in the 21st century.
Graduate Certificate in Design BusinessThis new graduate certificate program consists of six courses in design management, business, innovation, and leadership that address issues confronting design-intensive and creative industries.

Studio Art Centers International (SACI) in Florence, Italy, is proud to
announce that in addition to our undergraduate and post-baccalaureate
programs, students can earn an MFA degree in Studio Art (Painting or
Drawing) or Photography.
Students in SACI's MFA programs pursue a curriculum integrating practical and critical skills that encourage individual innovation, creative collaboration, mentorships, and instruction from SACI's outstanding faculty. They benefit from interaction with members of the SACI Artists Council and the Friends of SACI Council, which include established artists, photographers, critics, curators, and publishers, many of international renown.
MFA students attend SACI in Florence for two successive academic years and earn 60 credits. During their first year, under the mentorship of their selected Major Professor, they put together a program that balances independent study with classroom study. In their second year, emphasis is placed upon career options for emerging artists. Students gain practical experience as teaching assistants and their work is featured in major exhibitions in Florence.
Working in their own individual studios in a fully renovated Renaissance palazzo in the heart of Florence, students are just steps away from the great works that have drawn artists and photographers past and present to Florence to seek inspiration and develop their own pictorial language. In their graduate seminars, students explore a range of contemporary art practices, visit artists in their studios, and interview museum curators, art critics, and other significant figures in the art world. Students travel to major art sites, attend international art fairs throughout Italy, and are encouraged, through individual practice and group critiques, to explore to the fullest their potential as creative artists.
SACI is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis through March 15, 2014.For details about our MFA programs and SACI scholarships, see SACI's website, www.saci-florence.edu.
